Promptly arrived at my flat after hours and managed to unlock my door which had a lock that I had assumed to be broken, Instead he managed to salvage it, clean it up, explain to me the history of the lock and how it worked, and he even replaced the front cover.

We Are Experts in Lock Security
Here at Seymour Locksmiths, we have had years of experience in the locksmithing industry. We have fitted 2000+ locks of various security levels, sizes, styles, and types. As mentioned above we will never sell you anything you don’t need and where-ever possible we will get you back into your home without causing any damage to the lock or door.
We often receive the question, how can you gain entry into my home without breaking the lock? We use a variety of methods to gain entry similar to other locksmiths but where Seymour Locksmiths stands out is our Locksmith Jeff’s ability to pick high-end locks that the average locksmith wouldn’t even attempt. Most Locksmiths can get into these high-end locks without breaking them given enough time but guess what? Most don’t want to pick the lock because they have the option of drilling the lock and replacing it. A couple of points should be made here,
- Drilling takes longer, leaving you stood outside your property.
- It costs you the customer more money as the lock will need replacing.
Here at Seymour Locksmiths we strongly disagree with this attitude and approach toward locksmithing, giving the customer a fair, honest and the best service we can give has been the goal of our company since day one. We believe that while these drill and replace locksmiths may earn more in the short term, our approach is that of professionalism and caring for the locking system in place will gather better results for our business in the long run. Happy customers that spend less money and get a better service than they would elsewhere are more likely to spread the word of our company to their friends, family and local community. We believe that this social word of mouth and reputation is the way forward to build a strong and stable business worthy of serving our customers.
I called Jeff out on a hot Sunday afternoon just before the World Cup finals! My Mother’s carer had managed to lock herself out of the house – with my disabled Mother inside. Jeff was there inside 30 minutes, gained access and fitted a new lock. The quality of the work was first class and I am very grateful to Jeff for responding so quickly.

Worthing Locksmith Average Call Out Time

Because we are a 24-hour call out company we really can come at any time that suits you. Commute to London and don’t get back until 9 pm? No problem. Need a lock changing before the school run? Common Household Locks in Worthing
The most common type of lock that is used in Worthing is Rim Locks which are fitted flush with the outside surface of the door. They are most commonly used in combination with a night latch, this is most common in Worthing households that were built prior to 1990.
Rim Lock Cylinder
Because of the high usage of Rim Locks, most households in Worthing tend to have solid wooden front doors. Wooden front doors are prone to swelling and therefore sticking causing the lock to not correctly engage with the keep.
It is this case that most wooden front doors in Worthing are also fitted with a five lever, insurance approved, Mortice Lock which functions in combination with the Rim Lock to provide added security and meet insurance standards.
Many of the original locks fitted to wooden doors do not meet insurance approval as they’re not built to meet current British Standard. Seymour Locksmiths recommend speaking to your home insurance company and checking that the locks on your home meet their standards should you need to make a claim.
How To Avoid Getting Ripped Off by Cowboy Locksmiths
While we’d love you to give us a call straight away, we understand the importance of shopping around. When you’re using online search engines like Google to find locksmithing companies, it’s important to bear some things in mind. Firstly, don’t click on the paid links at the top of the google search. These links are sold by Google using a bidding model, the winning bidder gets their link placed top for your search. This has lead to only the cowboy locksmiths being able to get the top links, they bid high to Google so they can get the link, then they rip the customer off which allows them to cover their costs.
Honest and moral locksmithing companies usually can’t afford to bid for these top position links while still offering a good service. Here at Seymour Locksmiths, we have tried using these links as part of our marketing strategy. Once we take the cost of bidding into account and without altering our prices to be drastically above market rates, we are left with little to no profit. Sometimes bidding for these links costs in excess of £80 per click, don’t let a cowboy pass this cost on to you.
Secondly, it’s in your best interest to use a locksmithing company local to Worthing. This is not an endorsement for all local Worthing locksmiths, we don’t have time to vet everyone and unfortunately, there are some dodgy locksmiths local to Worthing. The reason to use a local locksmith is to avoid having to use a national locksmithing company. These national companies have been known to take 3+ hours to arrive at customer properties, they usually charge 3x to 5x the correct rate and often leave customers doors completely damaged and unlockable.
Opportunist Thieves In Worthing
Unfortunately, Worthing suffers from break-ins on a regular basis, one every other day according to police.uk.
Although Worthing does suffer from high-end burglary and break-ins, the Worthing community faces an even larger problem from opportunist thieves. Opportunist thieves are always on the lookout for vulnerable home security. Their goal is usually to be in and out of a house in under ten minutes while making as little noise as possible. They will look for small items they can carry with them such as jewellery, cash, phones and car keys.
Low-end Euro cylinders are a sign to the opportunist thief that a house has poor security, these are usually the locks that come fitted as standard in uPVC doors.
Low-end Euro Lock
Low-end Euro cylinders can be snapped in under 15 seconds granting the thief access to your home. Snapping these low-end cylinders makes very little noise allowing the thief to stay undetected, especially if your home has bushes and plant cover in your garden. Seymour Locksmiths offer high-end euro cylinders that take the average time to break-in up from 15 seconds to 1.5 hours+. No opportunist thief is going to try and break into a property for that long and the certainly wouldn’t want the noise of the drill going on for that long.
Opportunist thieves are also on the lookout for windows that don’t properly lock anymore. Whether it be that the lock is jammed or simply eroded to the point where it can’t lock any more, the opportunist thief will take advantage of this as soon as they notice it.
Broken window locks mean the thief can enter your property virtually undetected, even if you were in the property you wouldn’t hear an improperly locked window being opened. Compare this to a well-secured home where the thief would have to break a window, make a lot of noise and draw attention to themselves and you can see why they would target a home with poor window locks.
Protecting yourself from the opportunist thief isn’t all about locksmithing, a lot is straight forward common sense. For instance, if an opportunist thief can see an item of great value through the window they will likely take more of a risk to break in and steal the item.
Leaving ladders in your garden means the thief can use these to gain entry through upstairs windows, similar could be said if you leave any tools outside, the thief will most likely use these against you to break into your home. Remember, the thief will happily create £1000s of damage if it means they can steal £100 worth of items from your home.
Locksmiths and lock manufacturers are continually working toward protecting residents and business owners alike from these opportunist thieves. Seymour Locksmiths can visit your home or business for a free no obligation assessment of your security against opportunist thieves, we offer advice on the best security option for you while at the same time only selling you what you really need to be properly protected.
Lock manufacturers such as Ultion have developed cylinders that meet an extremely high standard, they have been working alongside the Door and Hardware Federation to give these cylinders a Diamond Standard Seal, one step up from the Kite Mark system other cylinders have in place. Other lock manufacturers have also been working with the Windows and Doors Federation to get window locks to a standard in which they can withstand all attacks from the opportunist thief. You can read more about Ultion Cylinders and lock snapping below.
Picking is quicker than drilling and causes no damage to your door or lock
Is Cylinder Snapping a Security Issue in Worthing?
Cylinder Snapping is a common problem in all towns and cities. The Majority of uPVC doors come fitted with multi-point locking systems containing standard euro locks. These standard locks take on average 2-3 minutes to snap, allowing a thief to gain entry take what they want and leave again in under five minutes without making much noise at all. If your Worthing property still has standard euro locks then you could be vulnerable to this method of attack.
Door manufactures choose these weak locks not because they are the best on the market but because they are cheap and therefore allow them to reduce their cost to the customer. There are some door manufacturers who choose to pre-install high-security locks however it is rare for a landlord or a developer to install these, again due to the cost.
The best option for any Worthing resident is to install insurance approved cylinders, such as a three-star British Standard Approved or Diamond Approved Cylinders. These cylinders are the best on the market when it comes to securing your property. One manufacturer, Ultion, offers customers a guarantee of £1000 if their property is broken into through the Ultion cylinder.
In order to properly understand the difference between a standard cylinder and a diamond approved cylinder take a look at this video provided by Ultion. It Cleary demonstrates the superiority of the Diamond Approved Standard Cylinder. Seymour Locksmiths carry, supply and fit Ultion cylinders and can visit your Worthing property for a free quote.
To read more about Diamond Standard Approved Cylinders and if you really should be upgrading your multi-point locking system read our in depth guide in the guides section.
My Worthing Property Has Old Antique Locks, Can They Be Restored?
There are plenty of old houses in Worthing that still have the same locks that were originally installed in the property or ones that date back a significant amount of time. From time to time customers bring this subject up with me, wanting to know if the antique locks can be restored. The locks are often an important part of the look and feel of a building. An ancient door just wouldn’t look right with a modern day euro cylinder or rim lock installed.
Old locks can usually be restored to their former glory without any damage to the lock or the door. The way in which most old locks were designed allows for easily accessible maintenance as well as offering a decent level of security given the age. If you’d like to know how this works in detail you can read our visit our blog page.
In a lot of cases, Seymour Locksmiths would recommend having at least one extra level of security on your doors with old locks. A high-security night latch would be suitable and would meet your household insurance recommendations, however as old doors are often unique we can come and have a look at your door to see what the best solution would be. All quotes are free of charge and we are always interested in working on old antique lock hardware.
Stay Up To Date With Security For Your Worthing Property
Here at Seymour Locksmiths, we do a lot more than just install locks. We are avid fans of everything to do with security and guess what? We write about it regularly on our Locksmithing Blog.
We would recommend that all customers, as well as home and business owners, read our blog on a regular basis. Keeping up to date with our blog will not only expand your security knowledge but it will also help you avoid potentially very expensive and damaging problems. Take multi-point locking systems as an example, below is a list of issues that can arise.
- The door handle drops or feels loose.
- The locking points show signs of damage or wear.
- The door handle makes a grinding noise or clunking sound when operated.
- You need to use excessive force on the handle or key when operating to lock the door.
- One or more of the locking points fail to operate fully when you operate the handle.
- The key will not turn in the lock freely.
Readers of our blog will know to notice these signs and get the problem fixed before the entire system fails. Our locksmith Jeff can fix these issues but if they are left, the system will need replacing. Replacing the entire system will usually cost the customer at least double as much as if they had noticed these problems and taken a proactive approach. To get the problem repaired before the system breaks will only cost the customer labour as our locksmith, Jeff, is able to repair the system however once broken new parts must be ordered and installed.
This is just one example of the ways in which you can save money, stress and hassle by reading our blog and staying up to date with your security knowledge.
A Brief Overview of Worthing
Any town or city in the United Kingdom has a story to tell, and Worthing is no different. Over 104,000 people reside in the large seaside town, which is the second largest and densely populated borough in Sussex.
Spanning an area of 12 square miles, Worthing covers districts such as Goring, Findon Valley and Durrington.
Worthing began life as a Saxon village that belonged to the people of Worth. Initially, it was a hamlet, but its role would change as seaside visits became popular in the 18th century.
There was a belief that bathing in the seawater was the remedy to ailments, and it wasn’t long before several other resorts followed suiting including Bognor Regis and Brighton.
The arrival of Princess Amelia in 1798 meant that other wealthy families followed, which helping Worthing develop further as several new streets were built.
The early 20th century saw the population increase to 62,000 in the 1930s, with a series of landmarks also occurring throughout the early part of the 20th century such as the Dome in 1910 and the Pavilion Theatre in 1926.
The requirements for locksmiths in Worthing grew as the wealthier adopted the city as its own, which led many to reside there full time.
Locksmiths were now able to create durable locks, which were just the ticket for high end homes. Of course, locksmiths were also on call in the event of problems occurring.
Given the number of listed buildings in Worthing, a locksmith had to be a seasoned professional to ensure that these expensive homes were protected.
The listed buildings scattered throughout Worthing include Beach House, which was used by the Air Training Corps during the Second World War and Castle Goring which was erected between 1791 and 1825 for Sir Bysshe Shelley, the grandfather of English romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley.
As expected, the role of a locksmith was much harder than it is today, simply because of nature of materials. However, this didn’t mean that the work was any less impressive.
Fortunately, contacting a locksmith in Worthing nowadays is a much easier endeavour, and can often be carried out with no damage to the door. Seymour Locksmiths still carry out the same levels of commitment that was seen during the Victorian era.
The hills situated around Worthing were part of the some of the early flint-mining operations, and actually produced some of the hardest flint available.
It was this flint that was used by people to fell trees which transformed the Stone Age into the Bronze Age.
As well as it’s rich history, Worthing has also had its spot in the limelight. As well as being used as a backdrop in the movie “Wish You Were Here,” the town is also said to be the inspiration for Jane Austin’s unfinished novel “Sanditon”.
There are also several musical acts that have roots in the town of Worthing. Mike Kerr, one half of rock duo Royal Blood grew up in Worthing, as did Billy Idol. It was also the birthplace of dance artist DJ Fresh.
Nowadays, it’s not only it’s label as a seaside town that sees it a hit among the locals as well as tourists, although it certainly helps.
